Surlyn vs. Urethane- Which Is Really Better?

There are two main cover materials on todays golf ball market, Surlyn and Urethane. Both offer their distinct pros and cons and one isn't necessarily "better" than another. Should you be using a Surlyn or a Urethane cover? Let's take a dive and find out.

Surlyn covers were first introduced in the 1960s. Surlyn is much tougher than its Urethane counterpart which makes it ideal for the weekend hacker. Apart from being able to take the scuffs from trees, cart paths, and houses Surlyn is also ideal if your goal is to hit the ball straight. Surlyn covers do not allow for as much spin as Urethane which makes them ideal for golfers trying to straighten out their slice. When too much spin is produced on a golf ball it will exaggerate any type of spin put on the ball. This means that if your swing path produces a slice or a hook then the slice or hook will be exaggerated. An easy way to prevent this? Find a golf ball that you can put as little spin on as possible. A Surlyn cover is a great first step.

If hitting the ball straight is not something you have an issue with then perhaps you may want to find a ball with a Urethane cover. Urethane covers are not as durable as Surlyn but they do provide the spin capabilities mid to low handicappers are looking for. This allows for more control around the greens as well as on approach shots. You may lose a small amount of distance by using a Urethane cover instead of a Surlyn cover but nothing major.

So now that you know everything you need to know about Surlyn and Urethane covers it's time to decide which one you should use. I always recommend receiving a golf ball fitting. Do a Google search for services nearby that will do it. Most services cost a fee but it is 100% worth it. If you don't have a fitting location nearby then sign up for my email list on the homepage. I am launching my custom ball fitting service/subscription box this summer. By signing up for the email list you will receive a 10% coupon when we launch as well as access to a "secret perk" for the Indiegogo campaign that is launching in March. I can't tell you what this perk is yet but I promise you'll like it.

I hope you found this to be useful, let me know if you have any questions or comments below. Also don't forget to sign up for the email list and please share this post on Facebook or Twitter. It really helps me out.

Thanks again,

Mike
