Golf Banned In Scotland
Golf banned in Scotland? It happened back in 1457 just at the game's beginning. Golf is first mentioned in history at this time by King James II. It is inferred that the game had been around for at least a few years prior to 1457 as it would have needed time to pick up a following before being troublesome enough to be banned by the King. Anyway, in 1457 Scotland was under constant threat of invasion and King James II wanted all able bodied men over 20 to be training in skills such as archery. Of course there was a new game that many were playing instead. This game involved hitting a ball around a field and into a hole. Hint..hint.. that game was called golf.
We know this ban was not obeyed because it was repeated in 1471 by James III and again in 1491 by James IV. Finally in 1502 the ban was lifted. This time the church complained about the game because people were playing on the Sabbath. So in 1618 King James VI announced that golf on the Sabbath would be allowed as long as it was not played during service hours. After that golf continued to grow in Scotland as well as the rest of the world. Equipment got more sophisticated and players learned new tips and tricks to help them play better. It is a good thing that the ban on golf was lifted, if it wasn't it could have had drastic effects on the game we know and love today.
Make sure you subscribe to the email list on the homepage. Next week I'll talk about the history of the golf ball and how far it has progressed since 1457. By signing up for the email list you will also receive a 10% coupon to be used at the Revolutionary Golf store this summer.
