How To Add 20 Yards To Your Drives
We would all love to hit the ball like Bubba Watson or Dustin Johnson. Smashing it down the fairway at 185 mph and watching it disappear as it lands 300+ yards away from us. I have some tips today that you can use to add 20 yards or more to your drives.
There are four factors that play into hitting the ball far.
First things first, the swing, A proper swing is necessary in order to get the most distance out of your shots as you can. I will list some key areas to focus on and key changes to make.
When setting up for your drive, take a slightly wider stance than normal.
For right handed golfers- tip the right shoulder down a little, 60% of your weight should be on the right foot. It is opposite for left handed golfers.
The ball should be placed farther forward, at the big toe.
Tee the ball a bit higher, ball can/should be almost completely higher than club head at address. 10% should be covered by the club head. However if this does not work for you, you can lower the tee but give it a try.
Use full body during swing, Read my other article here.
Hinge wrists at the top of the backswing and snap them through the ball on the downswing.
WARNING: Don't hinge wrists too early in the backswing as this will cause all sorts of problems. Keep arms and wrists straight all the way to the top and then hinge them. Club should be parallel to the ground at the top of the swing,
The next factor that I'm going to mention that will add yards to your drives is the driver you are using. I briefly talked about finding the right driver for you here on my How To Fix Your Slice Without Having To See An Instructor article. To sum it up, just because Dustin Johnson is using the TaylorMade M1 Driver doesn't mean you should too. I used to be a Harry Potter fan, if you ever read the books or watched the movies you should know that the wizards have to be selected by their wands and only certain wands are the right ones for them. I believe it is the same way with golf clubs. Some people are meant to use certain clubs while others do better with others. I actually don't know why it is like this but I have noticed it many times before. So I'd recommend going to your local golf shop and getting fitted for a driver by testing a bunch on a monitor and see what is best for you.
Now as the golf ball guy you probably already guessed I was going to mention this. But you need to be custom fit for the right golf ball. Currently there is only one company that I know of that does this. It's Golf Galaxy, a branch of Dick's Sporting goods. They use a launch monitor to show you what golf balls from every brand that you should be using. The golf ball you are using can directly affect your distance. If the compression is too low or too high for your swing speed, then you are going to lose distance. It's important to be fit for golf balls just like you are for clubs. You should also steer clear of getting "fit" on golf brand websites such as Titleist, Bridgestone, TaylorMade, etc. They want you to buy their most expensive balls so they are going to almost always give you an inaccurate recommendation. This is why you need a service like Revolutionary Golf Balls. Our mission is to change the mindset of golfers when it comes to choosing and purchasing golf balls. Finally and in my opinion one of the best ways to increase distance is training in the gym. Not many people train for golf like they do for other sports. But golf is a sport and it should be treated like one. I recommend you pick up a copy of Weight Training for Golf by Kai Fusser. It is a great book that you can use to start doing the right exercises now in the gym to increase distance, eliminate fatigue, and prevent injuries. Now be careful working out without the guidance of a golf specific teacher, whether it be a book, website, or video. There are some exercises that actually will harm your golf game instead of help it so it is important to use golf specific exercises in your training regimen.
That is all for today, if you have any questions or any of your own tips please share them in the comments below. And remember to sign up for the email list for more posts like this.
