Hey guys I wanted to start a discussion about the importance of compression in a golf ball. As you know I'm an advocate for finding the right type of golf ball and this includes finding a ball with the correct compression. Compression numbers are not ideal for determining how easily a ball compresses because it also has to do with construction and cover material. Therefore you must turn to the manufacturer or a credible source (Revolutionary Golf) in order to determine if a ball is low or high compression. High compression golf balls are for fast swinging low handicap golfers. Typically if you have a swing speed above 95 mph then high compression is ideal. If you have a swing below 95 mph you should be using a lower compression ball.
I want to stress that it is very important to be using the proper compression. If you can't produce a fast enough swing in order to compress a ball you are going to lose distance, accuracy, trajectory, and feel. It is also important because you are not going to compress it enough which will increase the amount of spin you put on the ball. This means that if you slice you may want to try a lower compression golf ball. The more compressed the ball is on impact the less spin it will have. A ball with less spin will not slice or hook as much because the spin not only refers to back spin but it also refers to the side spin generated from imperfect swings. A lower compression golf ball can straighten out your shot tremendously.
So let me know your thoughts. Do you know what your swing speed is? What compression do you use (high, low)? Do you have trouble hitting the ball straight? Let me know if you have any additional information on compression that I forgot to include.
